These perennials grow slowly, but eventually reach a height of 34″-36″ tall and a spread of 30″ wide. Peter Brand Peony ( Paeonia lactiflora ‘Peter Brand’) can be grown in Zones 3-8. The foliage is a dark green shade and the stems are strong enough that this peony often does not require staking or support. While the flowers are a ruby-red color when they first open, they mature into a rich purple color as the petals unfurl. They are difficult to propagate and take years to establish. Tree Peonies differ from Herbaceous Peonies in that they have a woody base that remains year round, then, with the warmth of spring, it magically transforms into a shrub. They are great for large gardens too, because of their lasting display and, once established they can be left to their own devices so you can relax. They are a great choice for small gardens, because they are so slow growing, don’t take up much space and the seasonal flowers become a great focal point. While the shorter stems aren’t great for picking, they are certainly garden worthy. Because the bushes are so compact there is no need to stake. The flowers open mid season, just after ‘Shimadaijin’. The fully double, magenta purple blooms are luminous and easily grow 20cm across, stealing the show. The flowers show beautifully, facing upward or outward above the foliage. The bush is nice and compact with plenty of flowers.
